Fix / Swap / Thrift instead of buying it new…
…and save money while reducing emissions!
The most climate-friendly product is the one that you already own. And the second best is second-hand.
This is one of the top-5 high-impact climate actions you can take!
Kiwis spend over $8 billion each year on new clothing and footwear. Add in cars, appliances, phones, and all the other things we buy new, and our shopping habits tell a story: if everyone lived like we do in Aotearoa, we’d need 3.3 Earths.
We only have the one planet Earth.
“New Zealand is among the top waste producing nations in the OECD. Annually, we throw away around 3.2 tonnes of waste each. We also have the lowest rate of recycling or reuse of waste materials, with only 35% of our waste recycled or reused. The rest is sent to landfill, impacting our environment and, as it breaks down, creating greenhouse gases. Waste is the cause of 4.6% of New Zealand’s gross greenhouse gas emissions.” – New Zealand Infrastructure Strategy, 2022 – 2052.
But here’s where it gets exciting: Fixing, swapping or buying second-hand has MASSIVE impact.
Fixing a pre-loved item is sensible and kind to the planet. Thrifting and swapping is for everyone. It’s cool, it’s fun and it’s creative.
”You’d never guess it, but most of my outfits are actually second hand. I love how much fun it is to go thrifting with my friends, it’s something we always do as part of our ‘girls trip’!”, says Reporter, Brave NZ Charity Founder and Miss World NZ Model Jess Tyson

Make it structural

Talk to your school, your club, your employer. Demand your council and government!
Fixing something or buying second-hand shouldn’t require extra effort or motivation. The system around us should make reuse the normal and obvious choice.
We can help in our communities by encouraging schools and clubs to run uniform, book, or gear swap systems. In our community organisations we can help create shared inventories or repair cafes before buying new.
We can bring this change in our workplaces too – Demand our workplaces adopt a “second-hand first” procurement policy for furniture, office equipment, and event materials.
We can affect the larger systems by supporting companies and businesses that offer repair, resale, or take-back schemes. We can put pressure on our councils and government to incentivise reuse industries and support right-to-repair policies.
When reuse becomes normal, everyone’s impact gets smaller — without any individual having to try harder.
